Each morning starts with a short settling-in time after which staff and children sit together for registration. A free-play session follows during which the children choose from a wide range of activities and swap when they are ready. Activities include painting, role play, dressing-up, jigsaws, play dough, and water play. At the same time, all children are encouraged to participate in an adult-led and evaluated activity that is planned for the older stage/age children with a simplified form available for the others.
During the morning, the children sit together to discuss the 'treasure' that the children have brought for the week's topic and for a story. Later, the children take turns to visit the 'Chelford Cafe' for a snack. The children go to the toilet and wash their hands, then help themselves (with help if needed) to a choice of fruit, another sugar-free snack, and a drink of milk or water. The snack is followed by PE, music or another free-play session. The morning ends with singing, games and the handing out of the 'treasure'.
The morning for children who will be starting school the following September aims to provide a more 'structured' play-based learning environment.
This session includes two main curriculum activities of around 20 minutes each that cover specific learning goals. All of the children do the activity as a group assisted by the staff. These activities are interspersed with discussion times, a snack, a free-play time and a group listening and language session, and the morning ends with a group activity such as ball skills or drama.
